What to wear on Memorial Day
Memorial Day is a federal holiday on the last Monday in May that honors service members who died serving the United States. The VA’s National Cemetery Administration traces it to Decoration Day, formalized in 1868 by General John A. Logan’s General Orders No. 11. Flag Day, June 14, marks the day in 1777 when the Second Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes. GovInfo notes that President Wilson proclaimed a national observance in 1916 and that a 1949 law made it a permanent observance.
