Kids' 4th of July Outfits by Age: Baby, Toddler and Big Kid

The best kids’ 4th of July outfit depends on age. Babies need shade and light layers that cover skin more than bold prints. Toddlers need easy-change pieces in the right 2T to 5T size. Older kids can pick their own flag tee. At every age, skip hood drawstrings, add sun protection and keep sparklers away from small hands.

What size should you buy? A quick chart

Kids’ sizes are based on weight and height, not age. Gerber Childrenswear publishes this chart:

Gerber’s rule of thumb is “when in doubt, size up,” because a slightly big outfit still works and a small one does not. Other brands run differently, so check each listing’s chart. For a holiday outfit bought in May or June, sizing up also leaves room for a growth spurt before July 4.

4th of July outfits for babies (0 to 12 months)

Comfort and sun protection matter more than the print.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says to keep babies younger than 6 months out of direct sunlight, using shade from a tree, an umbrella or a stroller canopy. It recommends lightweight clothing that covers the arms and legs and brimmed hats that shade the neck. Sunscreen is fine on small areas not covered by clothing, the AAP says, but babies put their hands in their mouths a lot.

Good options:

• A long-sleeve cotton romper or sleeper in a star or stripe print, for shaded daytime events.
• A short-sleeve bodysuit with a flag print, plus a light swaddle or muslin blanket for cover.
• A sun hat with a wide brim. The AAP suggests a brim of about three inches.

Skip tutus and layered skirts in the car seat, and pack a spare outfit. Holiday food is messy.

Toddler 4th of July outfits (2T to 5T)

Toddlers move fast and need diaper or potty access, so two-piece outfits beat one-piece dresses and overalls for many families.

• Flag tee and solid shorts. The easiest outfit to change, match and wash.
• Red, white and blue sundress over bike shorts, for climbing and running.
• Star-print romper for younger toddlers still in diapers.
• Hat and sunglasses that actually stay on. A chin strap helps.

The AAP’s sun advice for older babies and children: use broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 15, with SPF 30 suitable for most people, and limit sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. It also recommends tightly woven fabrics or clothing labeled with a UPF rating.

Outfits for big kids (sizes 4 to 14)

School-age kids usually have opinions. Let them pick a flag tee, a jersey or a pair of star-print shorts, and keep the rest simple.

• For parades and festivals: a lightweight tee, shorts and sneakers they can walk in all day.
• For a pool party: a patriotic swimsuit or rash guard. Rash guards also cover shoulders from the sun.
• For a dressier family party: a navy polo or a white sundress with a red accessory looks festive but neat.

Hoodies and jackets for fireworks night: check the drawstrings

Evenings cool down, so many families pack a patriotic hoodie. Check the hood first.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) treats hood and neck drawstrings on children’s upper outerwear in sizes 2T to 12 as a strangulation hazard, and they are not allowed. For waist or bottom drawstrings in sizes 2T to 16, the rules limit how far the cord can hang outside its channel and ban toggles and knots at the ends. The CPSC counted 26 deaths and 73 nonfatal incidents tied to neck and hood drawstrings between 1985 and 2019, most often when a cord caught on a playground slide.

The rule covers children’s outerwear sold in the U.S., but older, secondhand and handmade pieces can slip through. With those, pull out any hood drawstring before a child wears it.

Fireworks and sparklers: what the CPSC says about kids

Fireworks are the main event, and they are also the main risk. The CPSC’s June 2026 release reported at least 15 deaths and about 13,000 emergency-room-treated injuries linked to fireworks in 2025, including about 1,300 involving sparklers.

Its guidance is direct: “Keep children away from fireworks, including sparklers.” Sparklers burn at about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, which the CPSC notes is hot enough to melt some metals. The agency calls professional public displays the safest way to watch.

What to pack for a 4th of July day out with kids

• A spare outfit for each child under 5
• Hats and sunscreen
• A light layer without hood drawstrings for the evening
• Water and snacks
• Ear protection for kids who dislike loud bangs
