A 1776 shirt points to the year the Declaration of Independence was adopted, and in 2026 it can also nod to the nation’s 250th anniversary. The Betsy Ross flag, with 13 stars in a circle, is an early flag design tied to a family story historians have never confirmed. Both are common on tees, caps and vintage pieces.
What does 1776 mean on a shirt?
1776 is the year the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, on July 4. Printing the year alone is shorthand for the founding, the Revolution and the ideas in the Declaration.
The number has extra weight right now. July 4, 2026 marked the nation’s semiquincentennial, 250 years since the Declaration. Congress created the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission in 2016 (Public Law 114-196) to plan the anniversary.
Like the flag itself, 1776 appears on commemorative, historical and political designs. The number on its own is neutral. The words, images and brand around it are what give a particular shirt its message, so read the whole design before you buy.
What is the Betsy Ross flag?
The Betsy Ross flag has 13 red and white stripes and 13 white stars arranged in a circle on a blue field. The 13 stars and stripes stand for the original states.
The design follows the Flag Resolution the Second Continental Congress passed on June 14, 1777, now marked as Flag Day. As quoted by the American Battlefield Trust, it called for “13 stripes alternate red and white,” with the union “13 stars white in a blue field representing a new constellation.”
The resolution did not say how to arrange the stars. According to the American Battlefield Trust, that left room for different “constellations,” and 13-star flags from the period use several layouts. The circle is only one of them. It is the one popular history attached to Betsy Ross.
Did Betsy Ross really sew the first flag?
This is where the history is honestly unsettled.
The story. In 1870, Ross’s grandson William J. Canby presented a paper to the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. He said a committee including George Washington had visited Ross in 1776 and that she suggested five-pointed stars. His account rested on what Ross had told her family. The Independence Hall Association, which runs the Betsy Ross history site ushistory.org, notes that three family members later signed affidavits saying Ross often told them the story.
The missing evidence. National Geographic quotes historian Marc Leepson: “Every historian who’s looked into it has found no credible evidence that Betsy Ross made the first American flag, or helped design it, or even that there was a flag committee.”
What records do show. Ross was a working flag maker. A May 1777 order recorded in the Pennsylvania Archives paid Elizabeth Ross for making ships’ colors (flags for vessels), as the Independence Hall Association documents. National Geographic adds that she sewed flags for Pennsylvania’s navy. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History describes her as one of a community of women who made flags in Philadelphia during and after the Revolution.
The other claimant. Francis Hopkinson, a signer of the Declaration, billed Congress in 1780 for designing the Great Seal and “the flag of the United States of America,” according to National Geographic. The American Battlefield Trust reports that officials decided he should not get sole credit because others had contributed.
How the legend spread. The Smithsonian points to Charles Weisgerber’s painting “The Birth of Our Nation’s Flag,” shown at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, and the prints that followed.
The fairest summary: Ross made flags, the first-flag story cannot be proven, and the circle design is a genuine early American pattern whatever its origin.
Is the Betsy Ross flag political?
It became part of a public debate in July 2019. Nike withdrew its Air Max 1 Quick Strike Fourth of July sneaker, which showed the Betsy Ross flag, before release. TIME reported that Colin Kaepernick had raised concerns about the flag’s connection to an era of slavery and its use by white nationalist groups. Nike said it chose not to release the shoe “as it featured the old version of the American flag.” Several politicians, including Arizona’s governor, criticized the decision.
The Anti-Defamation League weighed in at the time. It told USA Today that the flag is “not on our hate symbols list,” and that it views it “as a historical, patriotic flag that is usually innocuous.” An ADL researcher also said the anti-government militia movement uses the flag, though not in a way most people would recognize.
For most wearers, a Betsy Ross flag tee is a nod to early American history. It helps to know the 2019 debate exists so you are not surprised if someone mentions it.
